At Grandpa’s Workshop, every piece is handcrafted in Cape Town using child-safe finishes and designed for real, everyday play. Below you will find answers to the most common questions around lead times, delivery, finishes, safety, and product use.

Each piece is handcrafted in our workshop in Fish Hoek, Cape Town. Lead times vary depending on size and complexity, but as a general guide:
Small Pieces: 3-5 days
eg. Toddler Walker, Swing, Toolbox + Toolset, Sensory Play Trays
Medium / Large Pieces: 2-3 weeks
eg. Learning Towers, Pikler Range, Mud Kitchens, Sensory Tables, Tables + Chairs, Bookshelves, Surfboard Racks
XL Pieces: 3-4 weeks
eg. Playhouse Shelf Unit, Cube Units

Most of our pieces are handcrafted and made to order. From time to time, we offer a small selection of Ready To Go items available for immediate dispatch.

Where possible, yes. If you’re after a specific size, colour or variation, you’re welcome to get in touch - we’ll always do our best to help where we can.
We use a combination of Pine, Pine Ply and MDF (Supawood) as well as hardwood dowels for the climbing rungs of our Piklers.

Let's chat about our paint first. We use a luxurious satin water-based Poly-urethane enamel perfect for hard-wearing surfaces with exceptional durability and strength, as tested by many robust and rebellious toddlers. This product has a beautiful satin mid-sheen finish and crucially, s odourless, lead-free and environmentally friendly so it is safe to use in nurseries and on your little one's favourite toys.
We use a premium quality water-based varnish with low odour and low VOC. It has built-in UV stabilisers and preservatives to protect and increase the lifespan of wooden materials. It helps to seal and protects against moisture with excellent wear resistance.
We use a phenomenal South African-made product by the Cape Town-based company - ProNature, to seal all our outdoor products from Mud Kitchens to Sensory Play Tables.
Their products are 'non-toxic, VOC-free, ecologically sound, which is harmless to the health of humans, animals and the eco-system which makes them perfect for use on kid's products and its kind to our environment too! The finish is velvety smooth so whilst these products are used outdoors they are smooth to the touch for the softest littlest hands.

Our workshop is based in Lekkerwater Road and we usually have a few pieces you can have a look at (and say hello to us!) - you are always welcome to pop in for a visit.
Yes, we ship nationwide across South Africa.
We work with a combination of trusted courier partners, depending on your location and the size of your order, to ensure your pieces arrive safely and in good condition.
For customers in and around Cape Town, we use a local, family-run courier who delivers items fully assembled.
We offer local delivery within approximately a 50km radius of Cape Town, including areas such as Big Bay, Melkbosstrand, Somerset West and Stellenbosch.
For these orders, items are delivered fully assembled, ready to use.
We can also deliver to areas such as Paarl, Franschhoek, Gordon’s Bay and Strand for a slightly higher delivery fee.
Yes, collection is available from our workshop in Fish Hoek. We will let you know as soon as your order is ready.
Address: D1 Real Key Place, Lekkerwater Road. We are the first unit as you enter Real Key Place Industrial Park.
Delivery typically takes 2 to 4 working days for main centres and 3 to 6 working days for outlying areas.
Yes - However we cannot change the delivery address once the package has left the workshop. Please take care to ensure the shipping details are correct or let us know as quickly as possible if there are any changes to the address details as we won't be able to re-route your package once it is already on its way to you.
For all National Deliveries: A waybill (tracking) number and Track and Trace link will be sent out to you in your delivery confirmation email.
Cape Town (local) deliveries: An email will be sent out to confirm the delivery slot with you, our courier partner will be copied in on this email and you'll be able to arrange the finer details and timing for your delivery.
We take great care in packaging and preparing each piece, but if your order arrives damaged or there is a fault, please let us know within 48 hours of delivery.
In line with the Consumer Protection Act, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund if a product is defective, unsafe or not as described.
We may ask for photos to assess the issue and will work with you to resolve this as quickly as possible.
For online purchases, you may request a return within 7 days of delivery in line with South African consumer law.

Yes. Personalised or customised items (for example, items with a name added) cannot be returned unless there is a fault.
All products carry a 6-month implied warranty under the Consumer Protection Act.
If a fault develops due to materials or workmanship within this period, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund.
Where a refund is applicable, it will be processed via your original payment method once the returned item has been received and assessed.
Yes. All of our pieces are finished using water-based, child-safe finishes once fully cured. We prioritise safety, durability, and everyday use.
We work primarily with quality Pine, Pine Ply and Supawood that have been carefully selected for strength, longevity, and daily uese and play in family homes.
We offer natural sealed wood, painted finishes, and combination finishes that bring together painted elements with natural wood.
A combination finish means part of the piece is painted while other areas are left in natural wood, creating a balanced, two-tone look.
Each piece is made from natural wood, so variations in grain, tone, and texture are completely normal and part of what makes every item unique.
Some larger items require simple assembly. All necessary hardware and instructions are included.
Yes - we offer a dedicated range of outdoor pieces designed to live outdoors year-round. These include products such as our Outdoor Pikler Playground, Outdoor Sensory Table and Outdoor Surfboard Rack.
These pieces are made using specially treated timber and sealed with a premium, 100% natural product, sourced locally, to withstand the South African climate.
Our other pieces, such as Pikler frames and sensory tables, can absolutely be used outdoors for play, but we do recommend storing them indoors and avoiding prolonged exposure to rain and harsh UV to maintain their longevity.
Yes, selected products include personalisation options such as adding a name or wording.
No, personalisation is included within our standard production timeline.
Personalised items cannot be returned unless there is a fault.

Grandpa’s Workshop began with one man, a set of tools, and a deep love for making things for his family.
What started as simple, thoughtful pieces made for his grandchild quickly became something more. Pieces that were played on, lived with, and loved. The kind that quietly become part of childhood memories.
Today, Grandpa’s Workshop is carried forward by his daughter, Sarah Lovick, who continues to build on that legacy. With the same care, intention, and belief that childhood should be filled with play, exploration, and joy.
Our pieces are inspired by play-based approaches including Montessori, Reggio Emilia and Waldorf, designed to support independence, creativity, and open-ended play in the home.
Each piece is handcrafted in Cape Town using child-safe finishes and built to be strong, practical, and long-lasting. These are not just pieces for now, but for years of play and for the childhoods that grow around them.
